pop! goes his shoulder

freak accident today.
sam ong dislocated his shoulder while trying to show me a hand roll (or whatever roll).
after he bailed out of the capsized kayak, he emerged from the water holding his arm in an awkward position.
he said in a freaky calm voice " gladys, i just popped my shoulder". and all the thoughts in my head are going"ehh are u bullcrappingme?!", "don't play la, not funny joke"...

i waited for his "just kidding" line but it didnt come... his facial expression didnt change any bit and it finally dawned upon me that we are in deep deep shit.
just us in the open waters. nearest boat/kayak/dragon boat was at least 300 metres away. shore line was at least 500 metres away... imaging me the inexperienced 1 star kayaker trying to tow a kayak back. i think i will spin all the way back.

before i could freak myself out with all these horrifying thoughts, sam took over the situation and in his still very freaky calm voice, told me to grab his paddle and kayak while he held on to the bow of my kayak and used his strength to pop his shoulder back..

i could see he was in much pain. and i was praying like mad "God, pls pls pls get his shoulder back in!! PLEASE!!"
and amazingly, he did.

pheeeeeewwwwww!
THANK GOD. hallelujah! AMEN! i tell you.

GOSH. just thinking of the "what-if-he-didnt-pop-it-back" situation now can set off another panic attack.
and imagine if he couldnt bail himself out of his kayak in time. he could have drown and i wonder if it would ever dawn upon me to jump in to rescue him.

gosh.... 1 week ago he was my instructor, always asking me "gladys are you ok?". and now he's the casualty of this nasty freak accident. my turn to ask "sam are you ok?"

row row row your boat

it's surprisingly how much can change in a week.
well, im comfortable. i am. in this new place.
a liberating feeling it is... and i thank and praise His holy name.
surprisingly, this time round, it didnt as hurt much and it really says alot.

on a brighter note! :)

im kayaking tmr with the "kiyah kids", ezzah, sam n dan :) hope we will take some lovely pics by the merlion, and esplanade bay :)
im really really excited to kayak. haha not sure why. just dying to soak up the sun, have the sea water on my skin and the warm breeze in my hair. cant imagine it was barely a week ago that i took my 1 star course and here i am "gushing" about kayaking. 2 star course soooooN! :)

on a brighter brighter note, im going hongkong with mommy in the last week of july!
besides the endless shopping and eating, what i hope for is some good bonding time with my mom again...
the last bit of relaxation before the new term dawns upon us!

bidding!

Bidding for modules sure is a pain in the arse.
Im so tempted to just choose my Profs based on how they look like.
But before you condemn me as a bimbo, I have valid reasons for doing so.
well, according to Malcolm Galdwell in the book Blink!, we should actually give our subconscious mind more credit that it deserve. A snap judgement can be far more effective than a cautious, well thought through decision.
This is how experts can immediately tell you whether a piece of painting is fake or not without doing any elaborate investigation on the authentic of the painting. Or a marriage analyst will know within minutes whether a couple would stay together or not.

It's really a good read! :) which reminds me to grab his other best seller "tipping point"....

well, for those confused and lost souls out there. here's my little piece of advice.
Do check out your Prof's photo before you head straight for the course outline or the past year's bidding price of that Prof.
After 13 years of education, I guess we are all now gifted with the ability to discern which lecturers look like they will bore you out immediately and which Profs will keep us entertained for the next 14 weeks.

goodluck:)
